This is one of my favorite clients and also one of my favorite look books that I've worked on.

Hair Talk:

To create a soft beach wave for Robert's entire Resort 2011 collection, I curled random sections away from the face with a 11/2 inch iron, concentrating on only the mid-shaft and leaving the ends out. After the whole head is curled, I used Unite's Trick Spray only on the ends for separation, texture, and shine.

I am so excited to share the cover story for Zooey Magazine I did with Kaley Cuoco!! She was one of the coolest girls I have ever met and it was a blast working with her and the whole Zooey crew.

I already loved her from The Big Bang Theory but I fell in love a million times more when I met her. Not only was she absolutely gorgeous, she was so damn funny, charming, sweet as cake, and super intelligent! Talk about beauty, brains, and all of the above! No wonder she's so successful, her adorable personality and talent combined is more than addicting!

Hair Talk:

Inspired by the wardrobe our stylist Kristina Van Dyk picked out, I decided to go with some 60's inspiration, I wanted to give her a lot of volume without sacrificing movement.

PREP- To give the hair some height, I used the Root Energizer by Unite and blew dry the root area upwards with a round brush.

SET- When completely dried, I set the hair with a 11/2 inch curling iron and pinned it in a traditional set to ensure longevity in each curl.

SHAPE- Once all the curls are cooled set, and pins are removed, I used Big Sexy Hair's Volumizing Dry Shampoo on the roots (This gives texture for back combing, this helps keep the hair from slipping and makes back combing so much easier). In small and thin sections, I back combed Kaley's crown area with a fine tooth comb until the desired height and volume was created but keeping in mind the shape and silhouette I'm going for.

FINISH- After I have created the desired shape, I used a large tooth pick to lightly back comb the mid shaft and ends for a more disheveled and bed head feel.

Cyndi Lauper at The 54th Annual Grammy Awards!

Cyndi Lauper has aways been a huge icon in my book. I love everything about her, from her no nonsense attitude to her out of the box beauty and fashion sense. She set the bar in the beginning, and definitely opened the doors for creative freedom and outrageous statements!

I had the pleasure of working with her a couple of times this year which include the 54th annual Grammy Awards. She rocked a tuxedo gown by John Paul Gaultier paired with some rad Moschino shoes. We decided to texturize her hair with a few added colors from the gray family including: lavender gray, blue gray, smoke, charcoal, and raven black. If anyone should rock colored hair, it's definitely Cyndi fucking Lauper.

Here's the skinny on how I created her rock and roll edgy look with some of my favorite Rene Furterer Products:

-Prep the hair with the Volumea Volumizing Foam to give a little boost to each strand and blow dry every section over directed with a round brush for maximum lift.

-After the hair is dried, use the Naturia Dry Shampoo to soak up any oils and moisture at the root area for a more dry texture.

-Using a 3/4 inch curling iron, wrap random sections of hair around iron but leave out the ends. Only concentrate on the roots and mid-shaft for a more distressed and lived in look.

-Once desired pieces are curled, use a close toothed comb and back comb at the root are for extra volume. When you get the height desired, switch to a wide tooth comb and lightly backcomb the mid-shaft to create a tousled feel.

-Spread a small amount of Vegetal Modeling Paste your hands to mold, separate, and shape the hair.

-Finish it up with Vegetal Finishing Spray.

Nothing beats Southern California and it's impeccable January weather. I recently did a shoot with Photographer Tyler Kandel and actress Jamie Chung on the beautiful beach of Malibu. While everywhere else in the world is snowing, raining, and storming, we literally had butterflies dance around the fields, birds, chirping, rabbits hopping, and gophers doing what ever that gophers do.. It was pretty much a Disney moment the whole entire shoot.

1960's for 2012 with Ari Michelson

There's so many things I adore about the 1960's. Vidal Sassoon made an impact in the hair world, Twiggy made an impact in the fashion world, The Beatles bursted from England, Woodstock was born, Elvis, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Bobby Darin, The Flintstones, and the endless list of icons who paved the way to what our world is today happened in the 60's. It was the age of youth as 70 million teenagers moved away from the stiff 50's and changed the cultural fabric of America.

I've pleasantly noticed so many 60's influences in this year's trends, from all the block coloring in wardrobe to big bouffant hair, graphic eyes to nude lips. I was once told by a fellow hair stylist that everything has already been done, our responsibility is to re-invent and re-create to make it more of our own, so I can't wait to see what 2012 is going to bring us!

Check out this 60's inspired shoot I worked on with photo grapher Ari Michelson. We had such a blast re-creating our version of the era that is still evolving today.

Magpie Darling Cover Story 2012

A few years ago when I was just starting out, I worked on a look book shoot for Crispin and Basillio with my dear hair friend Tony Vin. The shoot was a pretty huge production, we had about 10- 12 models and all of them were new faces to Photogenic[s] Model Agency. I remembered Dani and Alli specifically because of their long luxurious virgin hair, not to mention they were the sweetest gals ever! Shortly after meeting them, these girls completely blew up over night and before I knew it, I was looking at their gorgeous faces in editorials and ads internationally. Needless to say, I was more than excited to find out that I would be reunited with them once again to shoot the cover story of Magpie Darling, a European magazine.

One thing I love about photographer Brandon Showers is that he is so meticulous with his lighting. He makes sure everything is perfect on his part so he doesn't waste anyone else's time. So when we decided to work together for a beauty test with one of my favorite makeup artist, Dominic Elias, I was stoked!

Oddly enough, I find it easier to create fabulous and glamourous avant garde hair but a little more of a challenge to leave beauty at it's natural state. As a hair dresser, I secretly like to see change, I like to mold, create, and revamp everything I put my hands. In this case I had to hold back the hair spray and appreciate beauty the way it is, working with the model's natural texture and just slightly accentuating what is already there instead of changing it completely. Of course working with such an fabulous team helps get the creativity flowing.

A Lost Queen:: Bunker Hill Mag 2011

I love Los Angeles for several reason, one of them is the ability to drive a few miles away from the city and be in a whole different world. I recently did a shoot for Bunker Hill Magazine and we paid a visit to the sand dunes 2 hours east of LA. This place was amazing, the shoot was even more amazing!

Once I saw at the clothes and was told I had was able to have free range of the hair, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Knowing that we were going to be in the desert with high winds, I wanted to create a look that will not affect the limtited time we had chasing the sun. The look also had to be raw and effortless to match the deserted feel of our location but at the same time, add some edge and contrast to the sleek and geometric clothes..

Quick Tricks:
For Jacquelyn's hair I use a great amount of Unite's Dry Shampoo on the scalp and sprayed Unite's Tricky Spray on the mid shaft and ends to create texture and hold. After the hair started separating and I got the maximum texture I wanted, I loosely tied the hair in knots and gave a quick hit with the iron to create harsh bends and folds in the hair. Once all the bends are in, I used Unite's Second Day to give more separation to the ends and randomly selected pieces to twist, sculpt, and pinned it to the scalp. Once everything is set, finish it off with Unite's Max Control Spray.

Fixies Meets Fashion, Jeff Liu for GAP China 2011

My cousin Jeff [@thejeffliu] and a few of his buddies run Factory Five which is Shanghai's first fixed boutique where they do custom builds and provide a space for riders from all over the world to pass by for a beer and some dude/bike talk. He also runs a design/production company called Polar Bear Soul with his buddy Tyler and writes for a bike magazine called 48x15.
Besides being a big part of the Shanghai fixie scene this boy has caused a buzz in the fashion world too. He recently designed a biker friendly collection for LEE Jeans and was featured on the Harper's Bazaar runway with his biker buddies. Besides designing and creating, he's also a face for the latest GAP campaign in China!

So here it is! The shoot I did with the wonderful Cote De Pablo for Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine using products from Unite!

You can see this gorgeous woman kicking some serious ass and fighting crime on NCIS, but in the fall issue of BHL Magazine, Cote stayed away from her character's cargo pants and put on a fabulous gown and charmed us with her beauty and amazing personality. Needless to say, she was a pleasure to work with and left all of us breathless.

Beauty Story in Z!NK Magazine's Fall 2011 Issue.

A few weeks ago I had the chance to work with my really good friend / photographer Brandon Showers on a beauty story for Z!NK Magazine! It has always been a long time dream to shoot for Z!NK so I was immediately jumping for joy when Brandon called me for the job. I remember I used to rip out the tear sheets from this magazine for my inspiration book hoping to one day see my name in this publication.. and there it is!!
Not only was I able to spend a day with my buddies but got to see Mr. Levi at work, this man is incredibly talented and what a pleasure it was to see this genius at work.

"Z!NK magazine asked me to create a beauty story for their fall issue. I drew lots of inspiration from sci-fi thrillers like Alien, Space Odyssey 2001, Sunshine, and Moon. PREP TO POST Workshops presents a one of a kind educational and networking event open to photographers, makeup artists, and hairstylists mentored by beauty photographer Sean Armenta, hairstylist Sienree Du, and makeup artist Leibi Carias. This unique workshop will illustrate how to best light hair and makeup from not only a photographic point of view, but also from the perspective of how light interacts with makeup and hairstyling products as well as specific makeup looks and hairstyles.

Learn how three different artists approach lighting for beauty in this exciting two-day event. Sean, Sienree and Leibi will share their real-world experience working as freelancers in the fashion and beauty industries to enable you to become more confident in your respective fields. As a makeup artist or hairstylist, have you ever wanted to know more about lighting in a non-technical format? Have you as a photographer wanted to know more about makeup and hair to aid in your lighting skills? This workshop is definitely for you.

Sean Armenta will demonstrate his approach to lighting makeup and hair from his experience working with clients such as Paul Mitchell, Milani Cosmetics, NailPro Magazine, Beauty Launchpad, Modern Salon, and American Salon. Sean will go beyond the lighting techniques and illustrate how and when to use certain lighting scenarios that will best feature the 6 basic makeup and hair looks you will encounter.

Sienree Du will impart her expertise from being a Paul Mitchell artist and educator, whose freelance career has included clients such as Arden B, Wet Seal, Revolve Clothing, GQ, Elle, Seventeen, Shane West, Mya, and Cote De Pablo. She will reveal her favorite products to use for various situations and how to dissect photographic lighting from a hairstylist’s frame of mind.

Leibi Carias will reveal her secrets from working with advertising, editorial, runway and celebrity clients such as Vin Lee Jewelers, Jessica Darwin, Penelope and Coco, Vampd, Prestige, Mya, The All American Rejects, and Kiowa Gordon. Leibi will expose the ins and outs of makeup application techniques and products to best suit the lighting situation.

During the first half of the first day, artists will be split into groups of their specific disciplines for lectures. In the second half of the day, Sean will discuss lighting with hairstylists and makeup artists while Sienree and Leibi will lead the photographers to educate and answer questions. On the second day all artists will be brought together to view a practical application of the topics and to witness the interaction between photographer, hairstylist and makeup artist within a collaboration. In addition, attendees will be able to network with fellow artists, take what they’ve learned and begin planning their way to producing better work and elevating their craft.

Bello Mag #29 Grooming editorial: Going for The Gold.

If I could just be a groomer for the rest of my career I think I would be extremely happy! Check out this story shot by Allen Zaki and art directed by Jamie Breuer.

For Barrett and Taylor, I used some of my favorite grooming products by Unite!

For Barrett I used the Versa Gel mixed with a little of second day and topped of with a few drops of Shina Liquid.

For Taylor I used a cocktail of Wicked Wax and Second day.

A great trick is to wet and blow-dry the hair into the desired direction before apply product to sculpt! Set yourself up to win :)

One of my favorite jobs is working with the Wet Seal girls and entire Wet Seal staff and company. I had the pleasure to work on their Blue Asphalt denim campaign and it was a blast!

Check out this shoot I work on for Bello Magazine with a few of my awesome friends. Not only were we able to create something spectacular but we were able to have a blast doing it!

Hair Tricks!

For Amanda's look, I used Unite's 7 Seconds dry shampoo to soak up any oils that may be lingering on the scalp. Curled it with Paul Mitchell's Ion 1 inch curling iron in horizontal sections and pinned each curl up in a roller set to cool. After everything is curled, release the curls and brush out gently with a boar bristle paddle brush starting form the underneath sections and working up.

For Blake's look, I used a cocktail of Unite's Second Day and Creamy paste to give a lived in texture without too much shine and tons of control. It's perfect for that grunge look without compromising shape.

I was able to work with two of my dearest friends on this beauty shoot a few weeks ago. Not only did we have a blast working together but we winged out all of these looks within 4 hours of being at the studio. You know you are working with amazing people when everything just flows so smoothly!

One thing that I love about summer is all the cute braid looks that we can rock on the beach, by the pool, or to a cocktail party during these hot summer nights. It's a perfect touch of texture to any look.

How to create that not so perfect hair.

Being a Paul Mitchell trained hair stylist, we were taught to work with precision and perfection. When it comes to editorial it can't always be so perfect and thats when I have to just let it go and break all the rules.

To create this look, I had help from some of my favorite Unite products!

Step 1:

Prep the hair with 7 seconds dry shampoo to soak up any oils and moisture then wrap random pieces of hair with a 1 1/2 inch curling iron. The trick is to alternate your sections, so if one piece is about 1 inch thick, the next piece you grab should be either smaller or larger.

Step 2:

Spray the hair with Tricky Spray to separation and back comb hair with a brush rather than a comb to create texture for a more lived in feeling.

Step 3:

Gently grab random pieces working from crown to hairline and pin with bobby pins at top of the head. If hair drops out of your hand, just let it be! You can always re-pin those pieces up if you're unhappy with them later. (Remember, those fly-aways and random dropped pieces is what gives this look character)

Steo 4:

Once everything is pinned up, start molding and sculpting to your desired shape.

Tip:If the hair is too thick or long and your pins are slipping, try cross-pinning each bobby pin for more stability and hold.

Dear Future Professionals Of The World,

If you are trying to find your place in this industry, the 2 most valuable advice I can give you is test like it's your job, and assist your little heart out!

The other equally important thing you must work on after all the testing is get your own website running! We are in the Millennial age, we are all working and living in a digital world. With iphones, ipads, i this and i that, if you don't have a website that your clients can easily click on to see what you can do, how do you expect to get booked on jobs?

Example: I have a roster of amazing artists that I refer out to designers, art directors, photographers, and anyone that may possibly be looking for someone in my type of work. But! The only way that I would be able to refer them is if they had a website showcasing their work for the potential client to see.

Sometimes a referral can be good enough if they absolutely trust the person who is referring you, but most of the time, the client needs to see what your style is and what you are capable of doing. Then upon viewing your work they then decide if you would be a good match for their art direction.

I understand that websites can be a bit pricey, but there are so many other alternatives these days that hardly cost anything and will allow you to customize the appearance to your needs. Although it can be expensive, it's a great investment that will pay back faster than you know it. If you are serious about your career, it's something you just HAVE TO DO.

Fake it till you make it, confessions of a hair stylist.

When I was in Shanghai earlier this year, I wasn't able to bring my full kit and was missing some really important things that I needed. I figured I am going to China so their must be tons of places to purchase all my heating implements that will be compatible to the country.

BIG MISTAKE!

When I was called on to do a last minute look book job, I was in the city of Shenzen which is about a 2 hour flight from Shanghai. The job was in 2 days, the exact day that I arrive back to Shanghai. It was with a famous photographer that I had been hounding to working with so I had to be on my toes and impress the guy! I needed a freakin kit so I can do some hair!

I was not able to adjust my flight to get in early enough to prep, so I quickly searched the whole city looking for anything I can get my hands on - irons, products, brushes, combs, pins, clips, anything at all. Since there were no art direction available or images of the model, I needed to prepare myself for everything.

To my surprise I had no luck. In America, you can go to a grocery store and put together your whole kit in one shop, but in China, all the beauty and drug stores only carry skin care and the only hair care they had were shampoos and conditioners. I was actually able to find a blow dryer but not in the hair section of a drug store or beauty shop, I found it in the appliance section of a hardware store mixed in with the toasters, laundry machines, and house fans.

After one whole day of running around the city I only managed to find a simple and cheap travel size hair dryer that had the same power as me trying to blow out a candle, a plastic comb that might break on me if the model had thick hair, and a box of tragic hair pins that looked like it would probably take some hair on the way out.

The next day I had another went searching again but with a different approach. I hit up all the salons I could find but even they did not carry any type of heating irons or styling products. Seriously? How can this be possible? Almost everything is made in China yet there is nothing sold?

After my 15th salon, I had ventured into some alley way and passed by a sketchy salon where all the girls who worked there looked like they could possibly kick my ass and rob me blind. I went in asking the same question, "Do you know where I can find hair products and hot sticks for the hair?" (That's what the direct translation was for curling irons) One of the girls, with a cigarette in her mouth scoped me out and put her smoke out in the shampoo bowl. She noticed my American accent and knew exactly what she was doing (In China, they aren't really fans of American born Chinese girls with tattoos who can't speak proper Mandarin). She replied with, "Yea, but they don't sell it in this city, but I can get some for you, what do you need?" I knew right then and there that I was going to get hustled like a rich school girl in Compton.

To sum it up.. We argued about prices and a lot of other things for about an hour, but due to desperation and exhaustion, I finally caved. After I agreed to pay $25 USD for a few janky irons that were definitely not worth more than $5 USD, the girl who was no more than 17 years old (yes, I got hustled by a 17 year old girl) went to fetch these top secret irons from the top secret iron place that I apparently was not allowed to know about, and deliver it to me in the same alley within the hour.

It was like a drug deal but with curling irons. That was the most insane trade I have ever had to deal with.

After the journey of finding hair tools and products in Shenzen.. I returned to Shanghai and was ready to shoot with a crappy blow dryer, plastic comb, 3 curling irons that hardly work, a box of hair pins, and still with no styling products. However, I believe that products are just an assistant to styling hair and you should never depend on it to create something, but it would have been nice to have a can of hair spray and some dry shampoo.

I arrived to my job and banged it out, so here it is-

Hair Inspiration: 1942

A big influence for me is beauty and fashion from the 20's, 30's, 40's, and 50's. There's nothing more beautiful than women from those eras. Beauty and fashion was at its prime and influenced a lot of new collections we see on the runway now. Those were the days where women actually spent time and took pride in their appearance.

During the great depression while employment was hard to find and feeding your family was nearly impossible, the sales of lipstick remained the same if not increased. At times like that, women still depended on that splash of color on their lips to make them feel beautiful no matter what the circumstances are. Just because the world was falling apart, it didn't mean that they had to.

Inspired by the movie "Lust Caution" a film based on Shanghai, China in the WWII era. I wanted to create a look that had the classic feeling of a 1942's woman but add a little of my own twist to it to make it more modern and fashion forward. Of course with the help of wardrobe, photography, and lighting, we were able to make that all come to life!

Get strong and sculpted for Blink's Fall 2011 Collection!

Another great experience from my Shanghai trip earlier this year was working on this ad campaign for Blink Gallery, a French and Chinese brand created by a melting pot of designers from all over the world.

I love how all the designs are sophisticated but still extremely sexy. I imagined the person who would wear this collection is a strong high powered modern day woman who is kept up with fashion, politics, and everything in between. A woman who isn't afraid to take a stand for what she believes in but is always ready to have some fun when the sun goes down.

Inspired by the clothes and my imaginary character, I wanted to use that influence to create a look that also read strong and sexy.

Hair Tips and Tricks:

-Use Rene Furterer's Vegetal Sculpting Gel on the sides to control frizz, baby hairs, and cowlicks. If you want more of a shine, Rene Furterer's Styling Gloss Spray is an amazing final touch after the look is finished.

-For more controllable hair when sculpting for volume, prep the hair with Rene Furterer's Dry Shampoo to illuminate any excess oils and backcomb roots to mid-shaft starting at the back crown to the fringe area.

Shanghai Editorial: Walking On Air

I had the opportunity to do a few shoot in Shanghai, China earlier this year and what a great opportunity it was! Not only did I meet a bunch of amazing and fabulous people but I got to learn and experience the fashion culture there. People say Shanghai is the Paris of China, after working there, I agree.

One of the jobs I did there was with photographer Todd Anthony Tyler, a Canadian born fashion photographer who is now currently based in Shanghai. It was such a pleasure working with him and his team, these people definitely knew their stuff and I've never worked with a team so efficient, professional, and strong.

Shiny Toy Guns for MF Magazine-

When I first moved to Los Angeles, I discovered Shiny Toy Guns and immediately fell in love with their music. Their first album brings me back my first 2 years in LA and all the fun I had exploring the city and all the hole in the wall dance clubs. So of course when my photographer friend Karla Ticas asked if I was interested in working with them on a shoot for MF Magazine, I was extremely excited!

Carah and Jeremy already had such amazing rock and roll style, but for this shoot we wanted to bring a little more of a editorial feel. With wardrobe from Marisa and Karla's lighting, we were able to bring that feeling in but still keep their hip Euro vibe.

For Carah's hair we started out with a pin-up/ rockabilly feel and moved into a more glamorous look. I wanted to take her out of being categorized as a young rocker girl to becoming the young sexy woman that she is now.

For Jeremy's hair, I wanted to keep him edgy and rock and roll so I added lots of texture but still keeping some sort of shape and direction.

Who says rock and roll can't be pretty?

Talent: Carah and Jeremy of Shiny Toy Guns

Making Waves: Defying gravity, creating texture, molding shape.

Inspiration-

I was looking at old images of my mother in the late 70's and this specific photograph below really stood out to me, she was such a fierce young woman! She had nothing to fear, strong as hell, beautiful, and not a woman you BS with.

My mother's name is Quyen, pronounced Queen. This image was taken in Hong Kong before she moved to the states.

This is a photograph of my father and mother when they were in college, I think it was taken on campus.

I was so taken by that top photograph that I wanted to recreate it! Sometimes when you're trying to create large shapes you loose the texture, and sometimes when you want to create texture, you end up loosing the shape. Of course beauty is different in everyones eyes and we all have our own opinion of what is attractive. I personally love texture combined with some type of shape, form, or sculpture. I wanted to see a bit of smoothness fading away into lots of texture similar to what mama had but on a way larger scale :)

Step 1:

Section the top section out where the fringe and clip it away (this part will have a different technique). Start curling the hair with a 1/2 inch curling iron on 1 inch by 1 inch square section. Work from the bottom neck area and work your way up to make sure everything is consistent and no hair gets left behind.

Step 2:

When everything is curled, starting the in back section where you started, take a Mason Pearson Popular brush and start brushing each section out gently. Once all the strands in that section are brushed out use the Paul Mitchell 413 Sculpting Brush and back comb each section to the scalp. Continue with each section until you finish the whole head.

Step 3:

Release the fringe section you sectioned out and curl it away from the face in horizontal sections for the flipped back 70's vibe.

Step 4:

Once you have all the textures in, here is the time to start molding. Use your light hands to create a desired shape and spray with Unite's Session Max Extra Strong Hold Hairspray to hold.

The trick is to get enough texture in the hair so you don't have to over spray. If too much product is used, it would only weigh the hair down and that's when you loose your volume.

How to create extra voluptuous curls for the city gal editorial

For Amelia's hair I wanted to give it lots of volume but still have defined texture and shape. She has such pretty and soft features and I wanted to make sure that it was viewable no matter how it was shot. I decided to braid down one side to open up her face and then go nuts everywhere else! If you know me, you know I am a huge fan of texture and asymmetry :)

Hope you guys enjoy...

Step One:

Prepare the hair by spraying Rene Furterer's Dry Shampoo on the root area to soak up any excess oil and also to lift the hair for some volume.

Step Two:

Section out the side you would like to be braided and french braid from the temporal area to the back of the neck. I love using Paul Mitchell's Hold Me Tight spray to help control the fly-aways when I braid.

Step Three:

Start curling the hair starting at the neck line working up to the top of the head with a 1/2 inch curling iron. (Trick: Curl each strand back away from the face and keep the direction consistent) I love the Hot Tools Marcel iron, the handle helps me save so much time when I have all that hair to curl.

Step Four:

After the whole head is curled and cooled down, brush the curls out starting at the bottom sections and work your way up the hair line (Trick: Working in clean and controlled sections will help prevent tangles or missed curls)

Step Five:

After brushing out the hair, mold and manipulate the shape with your hands and backcomb gently for more volume. Once you have the shape sculpted, finish it off with Paul Micthell's Extra Body Firm Finishing Spray (this stuff is amazing and a must have in every hair stylist's kit)

Recently I got asked a question by one of my followers, "If I experience hair loss, what is the appropriate brand shampoo for me?"
Working in at the Angus Mitchell Salon in Beverly Hills, I get asked that question a lot! Everyone in this side of town wants full voluminous hair and are always looking for ways to fight hair loss and grow thicker hair. I've heard of people using horse shampoo to putting fertilizer (yes, COW POOP) on their head.

Fine hair and hair loss is usually caused by things a bit deeper than shampoo, conditioner, and product. It's caused by stress, genetics, medication, change of environment, health, diet, and lifestyle. All those things can cause a side effect if thinning hair. If you are looking for a solution, I definitely recommend talking to a nutritionist first.

In the mean time, you can still feel and look like a million bucks on the daily basis with the right thickening products and tools..

If we go back to elementary science class, everything that has water has a PH level. The PH scale goes from acid (Closes the cuticle of your hair) to Alkaline (Opens the cuticle of your hair). Our natural and untouched hair and skin is at the acid side. The reason why thickening products work is because the PH level of those products are on the more alkaline side which helps fattens up the cuticle to make it look and feel thicker. Don't be mistaken, higher quality products are more effective because they have chemists to perfect a formula and make sure that it's perfect for you. So of course a brand like Oribe will work a million times better than Suave or some drug store brand.

Here are some of my favorite thickening products:

Unite's Expanda Root Energizer-
Spray a bit on the root area all over the crown the blow dry your hair upside down. I love it for really straight coarse asian hair when I need to do some back combing.

Paul Mitchell's Thicken Up-
Use a couple of pumps on damp hair before you blow dry. It's heat activated so you have to blow dry for results. I love this for shorter hair styles, it really thickens up the hair from mid-shaft to ends.

OSIS Dust It powder-
Just sprinkle this magic loose powder on the root area when the hair is dry for instant lift and volume. It's perfect for greasy fine hair since it acts like a dry shampoo and soaks up all the oil which causes limp hair.

Teen Wolf Premiere- Colton Haynes on the red carpet

Lights, camera, and melt into Colton's very good looking features. I've been a fan of Colton Haynes since the TV series The Gates, so I was excited to hear that he is going to be in the new MTV's Teen Wolf! (Premieres on June 5th) I was even more excited when I found the news that I was going to work with him :)

I got to hang with the male cast all day and they were all so much fun! Everyone was so sweet, humble, and super funny. This groomer couldn't have asked for a better day.

Summer's Edge Editorial- Texture texture TEXTURE!

It's been a long wait but the Bunker Hill editorial with miss Kaet Lane is finally here! I am so excited to finally see this baby in print!

When my photographer buddy Scott Mitchell told me that we were booking Kaet Lane for this shoot I was super stoked! I love her cool short hair cut and strong features that effortlessly pulls off an editorial feel.

One of my favorite things to do is creating depth and shape with different types of textures, so this shoot was a ton of fun!

To create Kaet's look I used my favorite Rene Furterer Products:

1. Vegetal Scuplting Gel for the sides to control fly aways.

2. Voluma Volumizing foam to thicken up the top portion and add a little more control on direction.

3. Narturia Dry Shampoo to suck out any excess oils for a more matted texture.

4. Vegetal Finishing Spray to separate and hold the sculpted look.

If you drive on the 10 east from Los Angeles, you will find a little abandoned water park from the 80's on the left side of the highway. When you first role up, it actually looks a bit creepy, like a scene from "The Hills Have Eyes"... Which also made it such an interesting place to shoot our editorial for this awesome European magazine, Schon!

Whenever I head in that direction, I always know that the high desert winds can be a pain for hair... and that's when the brainstorming comes in with art direction. I wanted to create a look that will go with the whole concept but also bring a edge and editorial feel while taking in consideration that the 30 mph wind was taking control of our set. We decided to have Brea's hair pulled back in order to help us against the tornado but still have some movement for a little more drama when she posed.

Here is the break down-

In order to keep Brea's tight pony tail in place I used Unite's Liqua Versa-Gel to help me slick down any fly-aways and also give me a high shine. For the pony tail, I weighed down the tail with Unite's Tricky Spray (which also helps hold and control) before I wrapped large pieces around a 1 inch iron to give it some texture and separation.

Of course when mother nature is trying to sabotage your career with dust, wind, rain, and whatever she can think of, you just have to go with it and know that it will be fabulous! Work with what you have and make some magic!

Thanks to one of my long time buddies and LA fashion photographer Chris Callaway I was able to work with designer Robert Rodriguez on some of his look-books and advertisements. Robert is not only one of the funniest people I have ever met but a brilliant designer... OF COURSE you wouldn't expect any less from a man that used to design for Christian Dior right?

Must have products for this look is Rene Furterer's Dry Shampoo to create volume and dry out the roots and Paul Mitchell's Extra body Firm Finishing Spray to hold the fly away bits around the hairline for a softness with control..

A few years back I was working religiously with this NY based stylist turned photographer Illya Knight. The boy was such a character and interesting to work with. He certainly was able to make his muses do a lot of things that they did not think they were going to do when they walked in the studio... like wear pantyhose, fishnets, and high heels...

Inspired by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, way too many episodes of RuPaul's Drag Race, my weakness for sweet lady jane, and rice crispy treats with unmelted marshmallows... I got the fire under my bum to do a colored wig story that reads more pretty and sultry like all of SLJ's cakes are and less like halloween night in West Hollywood. So I reached out to my art director friend Jamie Breuer and pitched him the idea, he loved it and created a whole production to make it happen! Let me tell ya, this man is kind of a genius!

For the first time, I went to Joshua Tree the other day to do a Moroccan inspired shoot for Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine.. That place is so gorgeous! Doing hair in the wind is never a fun thing but thank god the inspiration was "effortless" and "lots of movement".. You know you're working with a bunch of pros when they take consideration of weather conditions for hair and makeup :)

I can't wait to see the story in print next month! It's going to be incredible!

For the boys hair, I used Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Shaping Cream. I love how this product doesn't get greasy and sculpts the hair without any build up or obvious product! It's definitely my number one go to product for grooming :)

Thanks to my dear friend James Vincent, I had the opportunity to work with photographer Andrea DeBarge Mils for a 944 Magazine spread on DJ Mia Moretti and Electric Violinist Caitlin Moe. The girls were so cool and fun to work with. They rolled up to Milk Studios after working a Oscars party the night before, stepped in front of the camera and gave it to us like pros.

For both Mia and Caitlin, I used Unite's Tricky Spray and 7 Seconds Dry Shampoo. The Tricky spray helps create texture and separation while the Dry Shampoo keeps volume at the roots!

Dangerous Beauty

There is something special about people in theatre. The fact that you are live and performing in front of hundreds of people, singing, acting, and influencing the crowd with no second chances is definitely an art. Not to mention amazing and ballsy. I think it's spectacular since I'm the type of person that would run away from a disposable camera even if it was 2 miles away. It's all eyes on you and nothing but you, every single breath and move is being eyeballed. Just talking about it makes me nervous!

I had the opportunity to work with Jenny Powers for a shoot with Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine and she definitely opened my eyes to a whole new world of performing arts. One thing that I discovered from working with Jenny is that she does her own makeup, hair, and wardrobe changes during the show! Since I'm a hair stylist and love everything that has to do with hair, all I could think of is the rush and adrenaline these artists get backstage and how much I want to be there to enjoy it with them!

Jenny is the leading lady of a provocative new musical, "Dangerous Beauty". It's based on the 1998 film of the same title, and the scholarly novel, "An Honest Courtesan", Dangerous Beauty tells the story of Veronica Franco, a celebrated courtesan/poet of 16th century Venice.

One of the women I had the pleasure to work with is Ashlan Gorse of E! I remember it was a pretty late shoot due to everyones schedule but Ashlan made is such a blast! She is seriously one of the sexiest, sweetest, and coolest chick on the block!

analogue girl living in a digital world.

With the millennial generation of ipads, iphones, and websites, artists no longer feel that they have to spend a fortune to print out an enormous 11x14 portfolio and carry the 30 pound book around town to meetings and interviews. I think it's a genius idea! That is what our world has come to today, we love anything that is fast, easy, small, and digital!

However I don't think any thing can ever meet the concept of reading a book or viewing an actual portfolio. There is just something about turning pages with your fingertips, feeling the texture and intaking the scent of freshly printed paper. So inspired by some of my brilliant industry friends, I present to you my printed portfolio book which is also available in a digital version!
The printed book is equivalent to a 8x11 magazine so I can carry it around with me to jobs and meetings with no effort. The price is depending on the number of pages you want to print but is significantly cheaper than an actual portfolio book so I feel comfortable giving it away to my potential clients as marketing material.
The digital version is formatted like an online magazine and can be downloaded and viewed on your computer, ipad, and mobil device! It's kind of another way to present your work besides using a website. Especially if I have specific work I would like to show a specific client, it's genius!

It's nice to have the best of both worlds!

A few months ago I was able to work on the wonderful and charming Lisa Vanderpump for Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine's cover story with some of my favorite artists Toni Ferarra, Pavy, and Argentina based photographer Machado Cicala Morassut who was just in town to shoot Kate Moss for the weekend. It was a blast shooting at Lisa's gorgeous house in Beverly Hills, playing with her ridiculously adorable dogs, and being fed by her delicious restaurant Villa Blanca.

Those who only know her as one of the real housewives of Beverly Hills, you are missing out. I was pleasantly surprised of how brilliant, intelligent, talented, and hilarious this woman is! I instantly became a fan.
